Overthinking or Intuition? Trusting the Right Voice.

“Trust your gut.”

“Trust your gut.”

Sounds simple, right?

But what if your gut is tangled in anxiety, trauma, or past experiences that make everything feel like a red flag? What if your instincts are clouded by fear… and not truth?

For those of us who’ve been hurt, abandoned, lied to, or left guessing it can be hard to tell the difference between protecting ourselves and pushing people away. That’s where the real work begins.

Overthinking: The Brain’s Alarm System on Overdrive

Overthinking feels like this:

  • Replaying conversations over and over.
  • Reading between every line and every emoji.
  • Struggling to make a decision because “what if” never stops shouting.

It’s your brain trying to find safety in control, trying to predict pain before it happens. But in reality, it keeps you stuck in a loop, never fully present and always questioning your own judgment.

Intuition: The Gut Feeling That Speaks in Peace, Not Panic

Intuition is different.

It’s quiet. It’s clear. It doesn’t beg to be believed it just is.

Intuition shows up as:

  • That calm nudge that something isn’t right (even if everything looks fine).
  • A pull toward or away from something with no loud reasoning just knowing.
  • A sense of alignment or unease you can’t shake, no matter how much logic you apply.

The Confusion Between the Two

If you’ve experienced emotional trauma, gaslighting, or unstable relationships, the line between intuition and overthinking gets blurry.

You start asking:

  • “Am I being too sensitive?”
  • “Am I overreacting?”
  • “Is this a real concern or am I just scared?”

That’s when grounding becomes essential.

How to Tell the Difference: Fear vs. Gut

🧠 Fear (Overthinking):

  • Loud, anxious, repetitive
  • Rooted in past experiences
  • Full of “what if” scenarios
  • Feels like panic or pressure
  • Distracts and overwhelms

💡 Intuition (Gut):

  • Calm, steady, clear
  • Rooted in the present moment
  • Not loud, but consistent
  • Feels like knowing, not guessing
  • Grounds and guides

Tools to Help You Get Clear

Journal it out – Write the fear down. Then ask: What am I actually afraid of?

🎧 Practice stillness– Meditation, prayer, or silence helps you separate noise from truth.

🤝 Ask for reflection– Sometimes a trusted outside voice can help you sort through the spiral.

👁️‍🗨️ Look at the pattern– Is this the first time this feeling has come up? Or is it tied to a familiar wound?

Final Thoughts:

The mind and the gut aren’t enemies they’re both trying to protect you. The trick is knowing when your brain is reacting and when your soul is responding.

So the next time you’re questioning something or someone, pause and ask yourself:

Is this my fear talking, or my truth whispering?

Trust that you’ll learn the difference one breath, one step, and one decision at a time.
