Grit: The Quiet Power Behind Perseverance
We often hear about talent, passion, or intelligence as keys to success. But what about grit? That stubborn refusal to give up, even when things get tough?

We often hear about talent, passion, or intelligence as keys to success. But what about grit? That stubborn refusal to give up, even when things get tough?
Grit is the combination of passion and perseverance in pursuit of long-term goals. It’s what keeps you moving when motivation fades and challenges multiply. It’s less about instant results and more about consistent effort, even when no one is watching.
💬 Why This Hits Close to Home
For me, grit isn’t just a concept; I’ve been reading about it, and it’s something I’m learning how to build in real time.
I’ve had to push through doubts, delays, and disappointments. From trying to launch apparel while life’s life-ing, to balancing work, parenting, and building this brand from the ground up there’ve been plenty of moments where quitting felt easier than continuing.
But grit? It whispers:
“Keep going. It’s worth it.”
And every day, I’m choosing to listen.
🔎 What Grit Isn’t
- It’s not perfection.
- It’s not talent alone.
- It’s definitely not burnout.
Grit doesn’t mean pushing past every limit without rest. It means showing up with purpose, learning from failure, and adjusting your pace, but never quitting on yourself.
🧠 How to Build Grit
Here are a few things I’m working on personally, and maybe they’ll help you too:
1. Define Your Why
The “why” behind RetroMental, mental health, growth, storytelling, and impact, gives me the fuel to keep showing up, even when it's slow or hard.
2. Start Scared, But Start
I didn’t wait until I had all the answers. I just began. Even scared. Even uncertain. That’s how this brand was born on faith and forward motion.
3. Stay Consistent
Whether it’s posting blogs, creating new designs, or just thinking through content while juggling real life showing up in small ways, it builds big grit.
4. Use Failure as Feedback
Nothing has gone perfectly. But every delay, every pivot, and every setback has taught me how to move smarter and with more intention.
5. Lean Into Community
My POP team, my family, my audience, having people who believe in this vision, reminds me I’m not doing this alone. That matters more than I can say.
🌱 Real Talk
You don’t have to feel unstoppable to have grit. You just need to be willing to keep going even when no one’s clapping, even when you’re tired, even when it’s quiet.
💭 Reflection:
Where in your life have you shown grit before? And how can you tap into that version of you again today?
